"In a new tract of oil territory the first wells strck generally flow;
but as other wells penetrate the oil bearing rock, the pressure of gas
is soon relieved and pumping is then resorted to. On penetrating a
vein of gas, the upward flow is so strong as to prevent drilling; the
drilling tools (which is a sheet-iron tube 6 feet long provided with
piston and valves to remove the debris from the well) is ..."
