Inscriptions caption sheet-(printed) "Pompeii," "Founded nobody knows when - no one
knows by whom, - is mentioned in history no earlier than about 450
years B.C. and then chiefly for its troublesome insubordation to
Impreial Rome: till chastisement ensued, and was stayed only by the
earthquake and the eruption of Vesuvius, which commenced its
destruction in the year 63 - and finally overwhelmed it sixteen years
afterwards.
During 1676 years the city remained lightly buried beneath black ..."
