TextJulia Margaret Cameron took many portraits of her niece, Julia Jackson, the year Jackson married Herbert Duckworth. She created multiple images during this same sitting, titling some with her niece’s married name and others with her maiden name. In addition to these portraits, Cameron composed allegorical and religious scenes with the help of family and friends. Some contemporaries criticized her less-than-perfect processing and printing techniques, while others praised her artistic approach—a significant compliment at a time when photography was not yet viewed as a legitimate art form.
