Portfolio with photogravures and gelatin silver print
23/200
Overall: 42.7 x 32 x 2.8 cm
Description11 photogravures and 1 gelatin silver print. The photogravures, hinged to heavyweight loose-leaf paper, are mostly abstracted nature scenes of trees or reeds over water, taken in the Camargue region of France. The high contrast between silhouettes, shadows, and light creates inky, web-like brushstrokes on the photographic surface and adds a metallic sheen to the water. The single gelatin silver print, hinged to heavyweight loose-leaf paper and the only one of the series signed by the artist, also shows Clergue's interest in the play of light on water, this time interrupted by a nude female figure. The light gray portfolio box is cut to mimic a mat window with a clear, plastic center in the cover, and the verso has two attached kickstands, one for vertical displays and the other for horizontal. The introduction is written by Mario Prassinos. The portfolio is number 23 in an edition of 200, and the last introductory page is signed by Clergue. The condition is fair, with some warping in the clear plastic window.
