Inscriptions Printed in image, BL: 1330. LAOCOONTE M. Vat.
Inscribed in black ink on mount, L and R: B. 304 Laocoon with his 2 sons. In Vatican St Peters in Rome. \ A famous group according to Phiny [sic] it was executed by 3 Rhodians \ and placed in palace of Titus. It was discovered in 1506 and \ termed by Michael Angelo [sic] a marvel of art. The work (of Pentelic \ marble but not a single block) is admirably preserved with the exception \ of the 3 uplifted arms, which have been incorrectly restored. Owing \ to the delicacy of the workmanship, the dramatic suspense of the heads especi- \ ally the father, this group forms the grandest presentative of the Rhodian \ school of art.
