Inscribed in black ink on mount, L and R: B.149. House with the Balcony. These rooms of the upper floor have \ been preserved by carefully replacing the charred woodwork by \ new beams. The projecting wooden structure is similar to that \ frequently seen in old continental towns. \ B130 \ These upper portions, consisting chiefly of wood, have with a \ single exception (the above) been destroyed by the red-hot scoriae of \ the eruption (Aug. 24th 79) The numerous well-preserved staircases prove \ that the houses must uniformly have possessed a 2nd + perhaps also a 3rd story.
