In the olden time, the Great North Road from Edin-/ burgh passed down the steep incline leading to the village / of the Water of Leith, crossing by the old bridge, and / leading up Dean Path, through the village of Dean, now / somewhat decayed, and past the gate of the old mansion / of Dean. This old mansion was some years ago pulled / down, and the site and grounds converted into a ceme-/tery; and it now forms the last resting-place of some of / the most celebrated men of Scotalnd, -Lords Jeffrey, / Rutherford, and Cockburn, Playfair, the architect, and / many others. The Dean Bridge, designed by the late / Thomas Telford, consists of four arches, each 96 feet span, / rising 106 feet above the bed of the river, 39 feet broad / between parapets, and totla length 447 feet. / 177 / no.
