Printed in black in on recto, BR: 10526–Dewey with His Sword–"The Gift of the Nation to Rear \ Admiral George Dewey, U. S. N., in memory of the \ victory at Manila Bay, May 1, 1898."
Printed in black in on verso, C: After the imposing ceremonies connected with the presen- \ tation of the sword and the review of the vast body of troops \ by the President and the Admiral, there were shouts from \ the crowd to Admiral Dewey who was about to leave the \ grand-stand to "hold up the sword." Courteous and com- \ plaisant as always, the Admiral held it a few moments in both \ hands before the applauding multitude, then gave it into the \ charge of Capt. Diggins.
The famous sword except the steel blade and the \ body metal of the scabbard, is of 22 carat gold. \ The name Olympia is carved on the pommel, which is em- \ braced by a gold collar, on which are engraved the arms of \ the United States. Below this are the arms of Vermont. \ The blade is damascened with the inscription: "The gift of \ the nation to Rear Admiral George Dewey, U. S. N., in \ memory of the victory at Manila Bay, May 1, 1898." The \ scabbard is of thin steel damascened in gold, with sprays of \ a delicate sea plant interlaced. On the front of the scabbard \ is a raised monogram in diamonds entwining the letters "G. \ D.," and under them, the letters "U. S. N."
