Label TextIn the nineteenth century, photographers who had the means to photograph for pleasure rather than for commercial gain were called “amateurs.” Many amateurs participated in photographic exchange clubs in which works, such as these two photographs, were created for distribution among members. Lady Caroline Nevill was a member of the Photographic Exchange Club in Britain. The prints seen here demonstrate her willingness to experiment with photographic printing methods while also identifying her as a member of a class in British society that had the luxury of leisure time.
