"Bricks can not be made without straw but they may be built into a
wall without mortar. Sticks and building paper held down by stones and
the ruins of iron beadsteads offer little protection from rain and
snow and cold if there is nowhere else to go. These refugees in the
burned district of Salonika were doing the best they could."
