Inscribed in black ink on mount, L and R: B. 217 Roman Forum. It was here that some of the most famous \ scenes in the history of the Roman Republic were enacted. The open space \ in the center was the place where popular assemblies were wont to be held. \ In the Forum + its environs building operations and various changes have \ been taking place at intervals for upwards of 2000 years. As early as the 1st \ half of the 6th cent. had begun the war of extermination waged by the Middle \ Ages against paganism. After the systimatic [sic] destruction of the Forum \ its remains were gradually buried beneath debris of four centuries. As \ early as 1519 Raphael formed a plan of restoring the ancient city and especially the Forum The most memorable spot in history of Europe will \ at length be brought fully to light + purged of rubbish heaped upon it by neglect \ of centuries.
