TextDuring the nineteenth century, creating scrapbook albums became a popular pastime, particularly among women and children, to preserve memories and document personal or family history. Letters, newspaper clippings, collectible cards, and photographs were commonly included. As photographic technologies improved, photographs became less expensive to create, reproduce, and disseminate. Small mounted photographs, called carte de visites, were widely available through commercial portrait studios, allowing more people to own a likeness of themselves and those they admired or held close. The maker of this album cut such photographs of family members and the British royal family to suit her taste and used watercolors to illustrate colorful and creative scenes.
