Victor Hugo, / à Jersey en 1854, pour être adressé à Euphémie Barbier, fille de Docteur Barbier, qui / était à Jersey avec sa femme auprès du poëte. \ Cette lettre montre également qu’Auguste Vacquerie était alors “l’opérateur”. \ Pour l’intelligence de cet album, consulter “Victor Hugo photographe”, par \ Paul Gruyer, Paris, Mendel, 1905. \ Cet ouvrage a été composé à l’aide d’un album dans le genre de celui-ci, \ conservé dans la famille Vacquerie, alors que le mien aurait été conservé \ dans la famille Barbier. [Translation: According to the letter below, this album was composed by Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hugo, at Jersey in 1854, to be sent to Euphémie Barbier, daughter of Doctor Barbier, who was in Jersey with his wife living with the poet.
This letter shows also that Auguste Vacquerie was then "the operator". For understanding of this album, consult "Victor Hugo photographer", by Paul Gruyer, Paris, Mendel 1905.
This work was composed from an album of the same kind, this last one preserved in the Vacquerie family, whereas mine has been preserved in the Barbier family.]
Inscribed in pencil (Cromer's hand), leaf before title page, B: L’ouvrage de Gruyer nous apprend que Charles Hugo, fils ainé du \ poëte, fut le premier opérateur de la colonie, puisque Vacquerie lui \ succéda (page 8). \ Le même ouvrage indique que Charles Hugo se servait de l’albumine, \ et Vacquerie de collodion (page 6). \ Le procédé à l’albumine fut en effet le premier procédé sur \ verre, et le collodion vint peu après. [Translation: Gruyer’s work tells us that Charles Hugo, elder son of the poet, was the first operator of the colony, since Vacquerie took over him (page 8). The same book indicates that Charles Hugo used albumen, and Vacquerie [used] collodion (page 6). The albumen process was indeed the first process on glass, and collodion came right after.]

Cet album sera \ alors un souvenir de plus qui vous \ rappelera le noble sacrifice que \ votre père à [sic] fait aux idées, au \ progrès et à la liberté de son \ pays, et le touchant dévouement \ de votre mère a [sic] tout ce qui est \ bien et beau. \ Je commets cette indiscrétion de \ vous faire remettre le petit paquet \ cy-joint [sic] pour la petite Bourillon, \ dans votre charité vous y joindrer [sic] \ les 6 couches , et vous direr [sic] \ que c’est un cadeau de bonne \ année que quelques pauvres \ proscrits font à la petite proscrite \

This album will be then one more souvenir that will remind you of the noble sacrifice that your father did to the ideas, to the progress and to the freedom of his country, and the moving devotion of your mother to all that is good and beautiful. I risk this indiscretion to deliver you the small package here enclosed for the little girl Bourillon, in your charity you will add to it 6 diapers, and you will tell her that this is a New Year’s gift that some poor refugees do to the little proscribed child. Forgive me dear child but this good would not be better done by anyone else than you.
