Gift of Dr. Philip Michael Peacock, 2004
DescriptionContemporary spiral bound, "magic magnetic" album of amateur travel views mountainous area of the Deogargh Range in Northeastern India, as well as views made in the area of the Betwa River. Images are approximately 14.9 x 9 cm. each, made ca. 1910 by British traveler and big game hunter H. A. Martyn. These were preserved as a collection of loose prints by the grandfather of the donor and passed along to him, who then arranged the collection in the 1980's into albums in geographical and (possibly) chronological order. Images are arranged 3 or 4 to a page with captions from the back of the images copied in ink onto the album page. Of particular interest is the inclusion of brief field notes of the photographer's, which identify the aperture openings, as well as the limited variations of shutter speeds possible (Time, Bulb, Instantaneous) with the camera of the period, and including subjective information about the technique of opening the shutter by means of a pneumatic bulb. (eg. "sharp squeeze", "long squeeze" etc.)
