This photo was taken at the Pierce's summer home in Woods Hole. Massachusetts. In the distance is the car ferry to Martha's Vineyard. Hadley's mother gets very uncomfortable when she looks at this picture because she thinks her daughter is going to fall off the railing. In fact, it isn't much higher than four feet, yet it still makes the mother so uneasy that she didn't want to buy this image. The success of this image is that it captures Hadley's free spirit. This is Hadley on the rail, but it could easily be a photo of a young girl in a small town in Spain being adventurous and playful. It is a universal expression of youth that you can find anywhere in the world.
