Inscriptions verso (typed label): This young stalwart is a Masai. The tribe is one of the few remaining pastoral groups in Africa, and is gradually losing its entity as its members merge with other tribes. The Masai are nomads, and very poor nomads in a country which can barely support the cattle which are their wealth and their staff of life. Each year the grazing worsens and the need to move on becomes more frequent. At this particular time they were encamped at Olorgasailie in the Ngong Hills, in Kenya. Their wandering takes them as far as the borders of Uganda, where many of them defect to the Karamojong tribe, richer in grazing lands. In another few generations, we are told it is expected that the Masai name will be only a heritage.
