in ink on verso: SILENT ADMIRATION-- The Marines brought more than the American arms/ to Tarawa, they brought the liberties for which the flag has always/ flown. With the Marines sweep through the pacific, Christianity/ also returned to the natives many of whom were deprived of the practice/ of their faith under the Japanese. The cost of this rebirth in the/ islands was Marine dead. Here, Sister Raphael of the Order of the/ Sacred Heart pays tribute as she prays for the most honored of soldiers,/ the unknown man who falls in battle for his country. An Australian,/ Sister Raphael has been stationed in Tarawa, Apiang, and Apamara./
