LAST DAYS OF THE OKINAWA CAMPAIGN/

The capture of the Japanese headquarters in the honeycombed/ caves of Kushi-Take mountain, which has been pounded by Marine planes/ based at Yonton field, signified the final phase of the struggle for/ Okinawa. Teamwork of American land, sea and air forces smashed all/ organized enemy resistance on the key Ryuku base and remnants of/ the Jap Army were driven into the sea, Tgus series of pictures/ portrays the bitter battle to dislodge the enemy from the southern/ sector of the island in the last days of the campaign./

ROCKET RUN- A Marine Corsair fighter liises it's load of rocket/ projectiles on a run against a Jap stronghold on Okinawa. Waves of these planes softened up enemy positions in the southern ridges/ with continuous rocket barrages. In the lower background is the/ smoke of battle as Marine units move in to follow up with a Sunday/ punch. The wrinkles in the wing of the photo ship,(lower, right), were/ caused when the cameraman kept pace with the attacking Corsair./
