U.S. NAVY CROSSES THE RHINE!/
For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy participated in a European/ continental river crossing as American bluejackets, garbed in Army khaki/ for the occasion, man landing craft which transported soldiers across the/ Rhine on March 24, 1945. Behind the master amphibious stroke were long/ hours of painstaking planning and meticulous preparation. Taken during/ the preliminary operations, these are the first of a series of photographs/ depicting the Navy's 'Drang Nach Oaten.'/
Belgian children watch as LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel), secured/ to a 'cradle', is hoisted aboard an Army truck for the 'big push' up to/ the Rhine./
