U. S. NAVY SHIPS PAVE WAY FOR ARMY SMASHING ASHORE AT BIAK/
Amphibious teamwork in action, pictured by Navy Combat Photographers as ships'/
guns clear the way for landings on tiny, strategic Biak Island in the Netherlands/
Indies, May 27, 1944. Possession of Biak, lying on the equator on the northwest/
end of New Guinea, presents a threat to the Philippines./

Columns of smoke rise from Biak as U. S. Navy ships pound Jap installations in/
support of landing operations. A lookout scans the scene, watching for enemy/
planes which might dive through the smoke./
