Many stories of the heroism of our aircraft carrier
crews and the Navy pilots who fly the carrier planes have come
out of the Pacific Theater of war but this little drama told in
pictures gives a new meaning to the word courage.
Photo No. 1-- A Navy pilot lands his Carrier F4U aboard
the carrier with a full belly tank of gasoline. The tank breaks
loose and rolls on the deck, catching fire.
Photo No. 2-- The plane is quickly enlfed by the flames
as the fire fighter crew goes into action in a daring attempt to save
the pilot.
Photo No. 3-- Within a few minutes the trained crew is
in action with its fire fighting apparatus. The terrific heat keeps
the crew at a distance but already the fire is being brought under
control.
Photo No. 4-- With the flames about the plane extinguished,
the crew continues to pour water and chemicals onto the burning deck.
Photo No. 5-- Another job well done for our carrier fire
fighters. Note that both tires of the plane were undamaged. The
pilot, despite the heroic attempt of the crew to save him, died in
the flames.
