THE EMPEROR'S WRITHING DRAGONS -- Like wounded, swollen sea
monsters these two carriers of the Japanese Navy writhe and
slash the water in futile attempts to escape the stings and
sharp stabs of the bombs, torpedoes and machineguns of the
air warriors flying the Pacific Fleet's divebombers, torpedo
bombers, and fighter planes. The ship on the right was one
of the largest carriers in the Japanese Navy. It was probably
the Zuikaku of the Shokaku class. Both were sunk in this
engagement which took place off eastern Luzon in the Philippines
24 October 1944 (WLT). Note bursts of antiaircraft fire above
the ships showing the intense fire into which our pilots flew
to achieve this tremendous victory.
