TextInge Morath was an editor and researcher for Magnum Photos before becoming one of the agency’s first female photographers. She joined Magnum as a photographer in 1953 and became a full member in 1955. After World War II, when her native German was viewed as the language of the enemy, Morath found herself favoring images over words to tell a story. During her time with Magnum, Morath traveled across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. She took this photograph on an early assignment to document the evolving neighborhoods of SoHo and Mayfair in London.
