Predominantly views of gold mining operations along California's American River, this album, assembled by E.P. Vollum, also contains views of Fort Umpqua in Oregon and Camp Day and the Klamath River and Klamath River Indians.

Photographs of gold mining operations along the Middle Fork of the American River in California are attributed to Charles L. Weed.

Photographs of Fort Umpqua, Oregon Territory are attributed to Edward Perry Vollum, the U.S. Army medical doctor whose name appears on the title page of this unbound album.

Photographs of Camp Day, the Klamath River and the Klamath River Indians are attributed to Lt. Lorenzo Lorain.

A portrait of an unidentified military officer is not attributed.
