[Cadets, Mt. Pleasant Military School, Ossining, N.Y.]

ca. 1895
Bound volume with collodion silver or gelatin silver prints
Overall: 23.5 x 21.1 x 6.5 cm
Gift of Donald K. Weber, 2009
DescriptionCabinet Card portraits of cadets, most posed individually in full dress uniform, probably as at the time of graduation from Military School. The donor of this album suggests that these are related to Mt. Pleasant Military School (Ossining NY) or St. John’s Military School (Manlius NY) or Vireum [?] Military School.

Photos are sleeved one-per-page in pre-cut window mounts and there are no inscriptions or identifications of the young subjects. Included are two individual portraits of older men, not in uniform, perhaps teachers. The majority of the images are gelatin or collodion POP photographs. Of the 36 portraits in the album, 27 of them are from the Vanderbilt Studio in Sing Sing [aka Ossining], New York. This suggests that while most of the students patronized the local studio, others may have had a portrait made in their home towns (New York City, Brooklyn, Richmond VA and Brockville, Ontario).

Album is in very good condition, covered in smooth brown leather with a large metal clasp.
Inscriptions inside cover, Donald Weber's hand (pencil): St. John's Military School or Mt. Pleasant Military School or Vireum Military School in Ossining, N.Y.
