Inscriptions Typed in black ink on applied label, verso BC: (The Retarded) 10/61 13) A MOTHER'S ANGUISH over the necessity of placing \ her child in an institution is mirrored in the face of \ Mrs. McCarthy. Her 8 year old son Charles is severely retarded \ and the institution was the only way of having him adequately \ cared for. Here his brother Joseph, and honor student, guides \ his hand in writing numbers on a piece of paper, on one of \ their bi-monthly visits to see the biy. Now 18, Charles is \ still here. \ Credit: Reprinted by persmission of the publishers from \ the book "Retarded Children Can Be Helped" by Cornell Capa \ and Maya Pines, Copyright 1957 by Channel Press, Inc. \ Photographs Copyright 1954 and 1955, Time, Inc.
