Inscriptions verso (typed label): 6/62 20) CHRIST PERPLEXED? One of many statues of Jesus to be found in the / Polish countryside, this one near Cracow seems to symbolize the pres- / ent plight of the Polish Roman Catholic Church. In an episcopal / letter from Warsaw on June 3, Cardinal Wyszynski called on Christians / to pray for the return of Poland's "Godless" to the faith. The / inscription here reads: "O Merciful Jesus, May You Keep us in Your / Safeguard..." / Credit: Ernst Haas c 1962 MAGNUM Photos
