Inscriptions verso BC (applied label): (Faces) 12/61 27) PRESIDENT ON THE SPOT: South Vietnam's President Ngo Dinh \ Diem, overwhelming victor in the elections held in May, came under fire from \ all sides at year's end. The Viet Cong guerillas, supported by the \ Russians in violation of the 1954 Geneva accord on partition, attack in \ the countryside with increasing boldness. Meanwhile in the U.S., following \ a critical survey by General Maxwell Taylor, is increasing military aid - \ also in violation of the Geneva agreement. Finally, President Diem has \ become increasingly unpopular with his own people, his regime being attached \ as "aloof and rigidly dictatorial" (New York Times). Here the President is \ seen afer a press conference in the Presidential Palace in Saigon. \ Credit: Nicolas Tikhomiroff © 1961 MAGNUM PHOTOS
