Inscriptions verso (printed in black on applied newsprint): NO. 3. / WILLIAM THOMAS SAMPSON. / (Sketches of Heroes of the American Army and Navy to Accompany The Journal's Photographs in Blue.) / William Thomas Sampson was born in Palmyra, N.Y., February 9, / 1840. He was graduated at the United States Naval academy in 1861 / and attached to the frigate Potomac with the rank of master. In July, / 1862, he was commissioned as lieutenant. During 1864-5 he served on / the Patapsco with the south Atlantic blockading squadron, and was on / that vessel when she was destroyed in Charleston harbor in January, / 1865-7, and was at the naval academy 1868-71. He was commissioned / lieutenant commander July 25, 1866. His next service was on the Con- / gress, on special duty in 1872, and on the European station in 1878, after / which, in 1875, he had the Alert, and was commissioned commander, Au- / gust 9, 1874. During 1876-9 he was at the Naval academy and in 1880 / was given command of the Swatara of the Asiatic squadron. He was as= / sistant superintendant of the Naval observatory at Washington in 1882- / 3, and in September, 1886, was appointed superintendant of the Naval / academy. At the outbreak of the present war he was given command of / the Cuban blockading squadron on the flagship New York, directed the / bombardment of San Juan, Porto Rico [sic], and his squadron defeated the / Spanish warships of Cervera off Santiago, July 3.
