DescriptionA disassembled album with nearly all of the photographs removed from the pages, sleeved and stacked in paper folders according to size. A few groupings of 3 vertically mounted 5 x 7 inch prints remain mounted to their pages. Cover are separated and spine is missing. An inside page is inscribed (in ink), Henry Gannett, United States Geological Survey of the Territories, Washington D.C.
Most of the small photos are 1/2 stereo views. Most of the photographs are by William Henry Jackson and are related to his work with the Hayden Surveys, but others both pre-date and post-date Jackson's association with Hayden (1870-1878). At the time of the album's purchase, it was believed that all these were also by Jackson, but it is now thought that sections of the images in the album are from the Powell Survey of 1872 and are therefore probably by John K. Hillers, and other images of Washington State and Mt. Rainier probably date from 1895 and have not been attributed.
At the time of its purchase in 1974 from the Witkin Gallery in New York City, the images were categorized as:
Photos representing Survey members, camp life, photographic equipment (approximately 50)
Native Americans (approximately 35)
Railroad related (approximately 15)
Yellowstone area (approximately 60)
Towns, forts, buildings (approximately 20)
Mining activities, quarries (approximately 5)
Grand Tetons (approximately 20)
Eastman House Registrars made the following distinctions in about 1974:
