It fils teh mind with horror to look at these / poor animals, their decomposing carcasses cov-/ered with tens of thousands of parasitic flies. / Observe the set teeth and curled lips of that / bay horse, -what fear must have overtaken / him, -what pain he must have suffered! How / suggestive is this sight of the greater horrors, / whihc this western part of France has wit-/nessed. Hundreds of acres covered with thou-/sands of soldiers dead or mortally wounded and / the battle raging so fiercely that neither sur-/geon nor nurse nor minister or priest could ven-/ture out to the relief of the dying or bury those / who had breathed their last.
