Inscriptions verso (printed in black): No. 1-IN A BRITISH CAMP IN FRANCE, MESS TENTS AND COOKS' SECTION /
Here we are in war-torn France. For years / these hills about us have rocked and trembled / with the shock of cannon, as from a perpetual / earthquake. As we look over this fence we see / the Mess Tents and cooks'Section of a British / Camp. Within another six hours, thousands fo / tired, hungry troops will be here, all demanding / something to eat. Look at these tents-have / you ever seen any just like them?-their ribbed / ends, their ventilators. Near this first tent is / a barrel and beside it an object resembling a / hammock suspended from four posts-what use / is made of this? Can you see a number of / buckets placed in a circle? If you were closer / to them could you see their contents? And why / not? Can the entrances to thse tents be made / wider, and how? / [extended text] / Copyright by Underwood & Underwood.
