This dam and another structure 150 miles (240 km.) \ downstream, divert water for the domestic use of the Pacific coast city \ of Los Angeles, more than 300 miles (480 km.) away, and for 18 neighboring \ cities. The dam, which checks floods and erosion, impounds enough water \ to irrigate hundreds of thousands of acres of farm land.
