The first permanent English settlement in America was \ made at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607; and later Williams- \ burg, in the same state, was selected as the residence \ of the British Governor of the colony. This is a wing \ of the Governor's residence at Williamsburg, restored \ to its appearance in pre-Revolutionary days. [sideways]
