The coast on which the Pilgrims landed to settle the northeastern states was stern and rock-bound, but exceedingly picturesque. Just as, in peacetime, many Americans go south to escape winter cold, so in summer they go northward to the cooler seasides of


New England. This lighthouse is near Portland, in the state of Maine.
