Vassily, Magadan

In 1953 Vassily was arrested in his hometown of Odessa for taking part in counter-revolutionary activity and sent to Magadan. He was imprisoned in a holding camp for eleven months before spending six years in a Kolyma gulag, mining gold.

During his imprisonment he spent nine months in solitary confinement. He holds the mug shot taken by the police when he was arrested. Vassily has never returned to Odessa.
