Kupol gold mine, Chukotka

Sandwiched between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans and straddling the Arctic Circle, Chukotka's winters are severe; average temperatures drop to minus 40C, with complete polar darkness lasting three months. The Kupol mine closes for four months each winter.
