Diamond mine, Mirny, Sakha Republic
Mirny, a town just below the Arctic Circle, was founded in 1955 when geologists came to the region hoping to exploit the area's substantial mineral wealth. The Sakha Republic has become the world's second largest producer and exporter of
diamonds and Mirny's open diamond pit mine is the largest in the world, 525 metres deep and 1200 metres in diameter.
