Babushka, Karabolka

On 29th September 1975 one of Russia's worst nuclear accidents happened in a secret laboratory in the closed city of Ozersk. Whilst Communist authorities evacuated Russian communities, they sent 1500 Tatar farmers from the village of

Karabolka to clear the area of radioactive waste. Many died of radiation-related diseases soon after the blast. Those that survived suffer ongoing health problems.
