Entry 475 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Very lovely gutta percha case case [?] with center medallion of Houdon Statue of Geo. Washington, surrounded by flags, shields, stars, and swords, and motto “ First in War, First in Peace, First in the Hearts of his Countrymen”. (4.00) Contains very early picture (tinted photo) on paper of Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln. She was daughter of bank president in Lexington, Ky, well-to-d. Born 1820. Died 1880. Married Lincoln Nov. 4, 1842. Of jealous, temperamental nature. Declared insane by Chicago court in 1875, put in private sanitarium. Went to Europe returned 1880. Went to Springfield, Ill to stay with sister, Mrs. Niniam[?] Edwards, wife of member of Ill. Legislature, in whose home she originally met Lincoln. Died soon after. She had 4 sons, Robert born in 1843 died 1926, Edward Baker, died in 1850, Willie Born 1850 died in 1862 in White House, and Thomas (Tad) born 1853, died 1871. Fine set of jewelry made of small pearls in medallions worn in most of Mrs. Lincoln’s pictures. Set had necklace, earrings, & bracelets, & was later presented by Robert Lincoln to Library of Congress, where it is on exhibition with other Lincoln replicas. Mary Todd gave this very early photo to Frank Leslie, early owner and [?] of Leslie’s magazine. I have no information on whether he had a woodcut made from it, or an engraving & published it. Very rare item, for she had very few photos taken and very few are known. Cost. (11.00)
