Inscriptions Inscribed in pen on applied label on spine of case: 435
Entry 435 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Ambrotype of Gen. George McClellan. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., 1836. Died at Orange, N.J, 1885. Attended Univ. of pa. for 2 yrs, then graduated from West Point 1846. Served as engineer during entire Mexican War, gaining rank of Capt. In 1848 became instructor of Engineering at West Point. Went to Europe [?] observe allied armies during Crimean War, & wrote “The Armies of Europe” for Congress. 1857 became chief Eng. & official of Ill. Central Railroad. At start of Civil War, gov. of Ohio appointed him major general of volunteers. Lincoln made him “ “ of Ohio department. In 1861 he drove confederates out of western part of Virginia. Loyal part became state in 1862 as West Virginia. In 1861 he became Commander of all the armies of U.S. after [?] “of army of Potomac. Because of his successful Peninsula Campaign around Richmond, he was deprived of [?] after 2nd Battle of Bull Run, he again had command of Antietam, where confederates under Lee forced to retreat. Union army advantage lost because McClellan failed to pursue retreating confederates. Relieved of command Nov. 1862 in favor of [?]. Resigned from army 1864. Nominated for Presidency by Democrats against Lincoln. Defeated by more than 400,000 popular votes and 212 electoral votes for Lincoln to 21 for McClellan. Very popular with army of Potomac in spite of criticism. Went to Europe for 4 yrs, returned to N.Y. to be chief engineer of dept. of docks. In 1877 became gov. of New Jersey. Did considerable military writing. This ambrotype received Jan. 12, 1942 from Mrs. M.B. Pulliam of Springfield, Ill. Her mother travelled all over U.S. collecting fine antiques & historical items. This belonged in her collection. She was born about 1854. Now dead. (Paid $5.00) (McClellan at one time refused offer of Presidency of University of Calif. so Henry Durant served.)
