Entry 440 in Mackay's notebook (located in library): Fine ambrotype scene of a group of people standing in front of a building with long barred window, which appears to be a military prison or jail or perhaps hospital. In foreground is a Civil War officer (northern) in uniform, with sword held erect, spurs, elaborate saddle, etc, astride a fine black horse. Bought of dealer on main street in San Jose in rustic shop. Very cheap for rare scene $2.25 plus case $3.50. Originally in poor case. Put in fine leather case costing about a dollar. Total about $3.50
