TextOf all the kinds of photographs that exist, family photographs are perhaps the most opaque to nonrelatives and the most susceptible to emotional enrichment. In his series Album, Vik Muniz assembles pieces of snapshots into mosaic constructions that themselves resemble snapshots. Each work in the series represents a common motif of family albums—weddings, Mom as a child with a toy, Grandfather in military uniform before he went off to war. Fittingly, the composite impression feels both familiar and disconcerting, like a memory that arises unbidden for the very first time.
