TextIn this set of photographs, Nick Marshall presents found snapshots of seascapes—many of which appear to have been made by vacationers—floating in fields of color that he digitally derived from the mood and palette of the photograph. Divorced from the picture’s original context, the ocean’s connotations of serenity and diversion emerge as the subject, and the formal characteristics of the snapshots play a strong role. This, together with the curled edges and shifted colors typical of heavily handled keepsakes, makes the suite of seven works a fitting commemoration of the photograph’s capacity to function as a portable portal to other places and states of mind.
