TextIn the aftermath of the breakup of a long-term relationship, Matthew Swarts began overlaying photographic images of his former partner with computer-generated patterns. This led to his creation of his series The Alternatives, in which the interplay between the patterns and the figures they disguise suggests the fluctuations in perception that accompany photographs upon repeated viewing. Inhabiting the intersection of memory and digital imagery, they project a future in which photographic images are as ephemeral as their meanings.
