Inscriptions Typed in ink on slip of paper placed behind photograph: The rear of the White House, feacing the gardens and the Washington Monument, Washington, D.C. This was probably during the Hoover administration: the president must have been in as teh flag is flying. Taken by someone about 1930 I believe and before the balcony was added on the second floor back of the pillars. The balcony connects with the presidential quarters and is over the wide drive at the rear entrance. The architects of the Truman administration when it was added, claimed it had been designed for such a balcony. I believe the rail is of wraught iron and probably slight changes were made such as cutting a door in place of the center window. It must be very convenient and comfortable and at least it seems to look well, whether it was designed for a balcony or not.
