Inscriptions Typed in ink on slip of paper placed behind photograph: Race approaching the finish line on the track at Havre de Grace, Md., before the starting gates were installed. Taken from within the stand by A. Thomas Nelson about 1930 to 1932 with a 1A Speed camera with focal plane shutter taking a picture up to a 1000th of a second and equipped with a 4.5 (I think Tessar) lens. The horses hoofs are sharp as seen with a magnifying glass. Eddie Arcaro and Willie Shoemaker, young riders then, rode in these races but only one print is marked. This may be the race where Mr. Lewis remarked to A.T. "when those horses come in, one can throw a blanket over three of them", and so one could. He did not suggest that I place a bet on that race: he always did it by telling me which horse I could bet on, otherwise I kept quiet. He knew his horses. See print of the approach to the double deck bridge where the Susquehanna joins the Delaware River for further information.
