DescriptionAlbum containing nineteen plates illustrating the "origins, progress and transformations" of photography up to 1870. Bound in mottled paper boards and black quarter leather, with title in gilt on spine, and marbled endpapers.

Inscribed in pencil (Cromer's hand) on flyleaf, recto, T: Cet ouvrage, avec q.q.[quelques] planches seulement, parut \ pour la première fois dans le Bulletin de la Société des Sciences \ de Lille, en 1869. \ Il parut à nouveau en 1870 [underlined], mais tiré à 50 exemplaires \ seulement; c'est l'édition la plus rare [underlined], qui contient une épreuve [underlined] \ de la planche de Niepce [underlined], "le Cardinal d'Amboise". \ La présente édition, de 1869, la première en grand format, \ contient des photo qui ne sont pas dans mon édition de 1870.
