Indeed it may be questioned whether anywhere on the \ globe there can be found within so limited a compass so great \ a variety of languages, of physical types, of psychical character- \ istics, of social systems, of mythologies, and indeed of all the \ subjects of study embraced under the general head of anthro- \ pology." This is the opinion of the veteran ethnologist \ Horatio Hale concerning the Indians of British Columbia, as \ expressed in the sixth report on the Northwest tribes of Ca- \ nada to the British Association for the Advancement of \ Science. \ There are various races of Indians in British Columbia, as \ distinct in language and customs as are the different nations \ of Europe. In his interesting volume on "Canadian Savage \ Folk," the Missionary Maclean says: \
"Amid the beauties of their mountain home, these hardy \ sons of the west strive to maintain themselves, but the ad- \ vancing bands of white men have already made a' change in \ their condition. The red men fail not to mark the change and \ predict the fall of their mighty chiefs, with the departure of \ the glory of their tribe."
