Inscriptions Printed in black on applied label on mount recto, B: VERTICAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE EARTH'S SURFACE FROM THE HIGHEST POINT YET REACHED BY MAN \ Photograph by Major Albert W. Stevens \ This exposure was made automatically by an aerial camera with its lens mounted in the bottom of the gondola, when the balloon was at its greatest height (11:41 a.m.; altitude 72,395 feet above sea level, 69,780 \ feet or more than 13 miles above ground). The area shown is approximately 105 square miles. The top of the photograph is approximately north. Extending across the right half of the picture is the South \ Fork of the White River of South Dakota, with the erosion channels of its tributary streams. The town of Parmelee, with its grid of streets, appears near the upper left corner of the photograph. The white \ object, slightly below the upper margin in the middle, is an instrument case suspended from the gondola. The shadowy lines extending inward from the lower left are ropes dangling from the gondola.
